Thoughtfully built boats, shaped around their purpose
At AB Works, new boatbuilding is about combining practical experience, sound construction methods and careful attention to detail to produce boats that are well suited to their intended use. From traditional rowing boats and day boats to considered bespoke projects, each build is approached with an emphasis on functionality, durability and quality workmanship.
Our approach is to take on projects that match the workshop’s capabilities, allowing the right level of care and attention to be given to every stage of construction. Whether building from established designs or developing a more individual solution, the aim is to create a boat that works well on the water and makes sense to own, maintain and use.
A practical approach to boatbuilding
Good boatbuilding begins long before the first materials are laid up or assembled. Understanding how a boat will be used, where it will operate and what the owner expects from it helps establish the most appropriate approach to construction.
AB Works draws on experience in traditional boatbuilding, GRP construction and modern composite materials. This breadth of knowledge allows construction methods and materials to be considered in relation to the requirements of each project, rather than relying on a single approach for every build.
Particular attention is given to the practical details that influence the finished boat, including structural integrity, weight, durability, finish and future maintenance. The objective is not simply to build a boat, but to produce a well-considered result that reflects its intended purpose.
Rowing boats, day boats and bespoke projects
The workshop’s interests include smaller rowing boats and day boats, alongside selected one-off projects where the design, materials and scope are suited to the facilities and skills available.
Every project is different. Some may follow an established design, while others may require more detailed discussion to establish what is achievable and how best to approach the build. Where a project extends beyond the workshop’s current scope, its requirements can be assessed before any commitment is made.
Discuss your boatbuilding project
If you are considering a new rowing boat, day boat or a more individual boatbuilding project, AB Works welcomes enquiries to discuss your requirements.
An initial conversation provides an opportunity to explore the intended use, preferred design, materials, timescale and practical considerations. From there, the next steps can be established, including whether the project is a suitable fit for the workshop.
